Quick Chooser (Answer These and We’ll Point You To The Right Kodiak Fishing Trip)

  • Your #1 goal: trophy halibut, salmon action, or variety
  • Your group vibe: relaxed sightseeing, or “fish hard”
  • Your crew: all experienced, mixed, or mostly first-timers
  • Your priorities: privacy, budget, or maximum flexibility
  • Typical durations and pacing (so you can plan your day)

Most Kodiak fishing charters are structured in around half-day or full-day formats. Choosing the right length depends on your target species, sea conditions, and the distance we need to travel.

At Kodiak Island Resort, we focus on full-day charters, unless you have booked a private excursion. Longer trips provide more fishing time and the flexibility to adjust if conditions change. We typically depart from the dock around 7:00 AM and return between 3:00 PM and 4:00 PM.

For those with a private charter, we will develop a customized game plan for your group, so you are fully informed of the schedule.

What’s usually part of the experience: a safety briefing, coached technique, and a clear plan for fish care once you’re back at the dock.

What You Can Catch in Kodiak

Kodiak Island is renowned for exceptional big-water fishing, though the ideal target varies based on your travel dates, local conditions, and preferred experience. At Kodiak Island Resort, we provide recommendations tailored to your specific priorities—whether you are looking for trophy hunting, steady action, or variety—to ensure you have a clear plan for your trip.

    Pacific Halibut

Halibut is the headline for many Kodiak Island fishing charters. These fish are powerful, unpredictable, and offer an unforgettable experience when the line comes tight. Successful halibut fishing is built on smart boat positioning, solid technique, and the patience to wait for the right bite. If your goal is to capture an iconic Alaska photo, a halibut catch is often the best place to start.

    King (Chinook) Salmon

King Salmon is the ultimate bucket-list catch for anglers seeking a true Alaskan challenge. When the timing is right, a salmon-focused trip offers a fast-paced experience with frequent bites and consistent action. They are an excellent choice for guests who enjoy a strong run and a rewarding fight.

    Coho (Silver) Salmon

Coho are known for their energy, characterized by hard runs and excitement near the boat. If your group is looking for an active and engaging experience, coho are an ideal target during their peak season. They are often the perfect species to make first-time anglers feel professional.

    Lingcod

Lingcod is a favorite for anglers who love aggressive bites and a little “monster fish” personality. They’re often paired with other bottom species depending on conditions and regulations, and they add a fun “wild card” element to a day on the water

    Rockfish and other bottom species

Rockfish provide steady action and variety, making them an excellent choice for guests who prefer consistent engagement throughout the trip. When conditions allow, targeting bottom species can round out a mixed-day experience and keep the catch interesting.

During your Kodiak Charter, you can expect to catch several rockfish species, including Black, Quillback, China, Tiger, Copper, and the impressive Yelloweye.

What affects what we target (the short list)

    • Your dates: season windows matter, even week to week
    • Weather and sea state: we’ll pick the safest, smartest plan for the day
    • Run times: some targets require longer travel; we’ll set expectations clearly
    • Group goals: trophy, action, variety, or a mix
    • Experience level: we can dial the pace up or keep it simple

How we help you choose the right target

Please let us know your preferred dates and what your “perfect day” looks like—whether you are looking for trophy catches, constant action, or a variety of experiences. If you are also interested in photography, wildlife spotting, or maintaining a relaxed pace, we will incorporate those elements into your itinerary.

We will recommend the best species plan for your Kodiak Resort charter and provide an honest assessment if a specific target is unlikely during your travel window.

Is It Better to chase one species all day or plan for variety?

If your group is visiting Kodiak for a single trip and wants a comprehensive experience, opting for variety is often the best way to ensure everyone has fun. However, if your group has one specific “dream fish” in mind, a single-species plan can be ideal—especially if your travel dates align with a peak window for that species.

What’s the biggest mistake people make when choosing targets?

We believe you cannot make a mistake when fishing at Kodiak Island Resort. We have seen guests choose targets based on generic “best month” lists rather than their specific dates and comfort levels. To ensure the best experience, we will build a customized plan around your actual travel dates and your group’s preferences.

Can you customize the plan if we care more about the experience than filling a cooler?

Yes, the best way to accomplish this is by chartering a private boat.

Please let us know your priorities—whether they include photography, scenery, wildlife, or a relaxed pace—and we will tailor the day to your specific interests. Our goal is to ensure you experience your version of Alaska, rather than a one-size-fits-all trip.

How to use this table (fast)

          • If your dates are flexible, choose a month that matches your top target.
          • If your dates are fixed, we’ll build the best plan around what’s strongest in that window.
          • For mixed groups, a “variety-first” strategy usually creates the most smiles.

What we confirm when you reach out

          • Your priority species and whether you prefer more fishing or different types of adventures
          • A clear expectation for how the day flows, from meet-up to return

This is how we avoid the #1 planning mistake: choosing a trip type that doesn’t fit the season window in which you are actually traveling.

Do charters still fish well on windy weeks?

Wind conditions can certainly impact our plans, affecting both where we fish and how we pace the day. Regardless of the weather, our goal remains the same: to choose the safest plan that provides your group with a great experience and the opportunity to catch a variety of species.

Is early season “slower,” or just different?

It is different.  No matter when you choose to visit Kodiak Island Resort, your charter will be amazing.

What a Day on the Water Looks Like (Step-by-Step)

Great Kodiak fishing charters feel smooth because you always know what’s next. Here’s the typical flow with Kodiak Island Resort—organized, calm, and easy to follow from dock to dock.

          1. Before you leave the Lodge:

          • The day will begin with a chef-inspired breakfast at 6 AM. After that, you will pack your lunch for the boat trip. A crew member will assist you in sizing your fishing gear. Next, you will meet the captain and deckhand.

           2. Safety briefing (short and practical)

          • Before we leave the dock, we cover the location of life jackets and safety gear, how to move around the boat safely, and what to do in the event of an emergency. Our goal is to ensure the process is straightforward and confidence-building for everyone on board.

          3. Run to the fishing area

          • We depart from Larsen Bay and reach Uyak Bay & Shelikof Strait fast—more lines in the  water, less commuting.

          4.  Set up and fish (coached technique)

          • We provide hands-on guidance on how to hold the rod, manage the line, and respond to a  bite, offering real-time coaching throughout your trip. Whether your group prefers intensive  instruction or a more relaxed pace, we will tailor the experience to match your preferences.

          5. Landing, photos, and fish care

          • Once you hook up, we will help you land your fish safely and efficiently. If you would like photos, we’ll keep the process quick to ensure a great experience while keeping the day moving.
          • Proper handling is essential to protecting the quality of your catch. We will bleed your fish and place them on ice to ensure they remain in the best possible condition

          6. Return to harbor and next steps

          • We will be back at the dock between 3:00 PM and 4:00 PM. Your captain and deckhands will hang your daily catch so you can take photos.
          • Afterward, we will clean and vacuum-pack your fish. Each bag will be labeled by species and frozen. At the end of your trip, we will pack them into 50lb freezer boxes for your flight home.

Typical pacing (so you can plan your energy):

          • First hour: orientation + travel + setup
          • Middle: active fishing time, adjusting spots as needed
          • Final stretch: reset gear, clean up, and cruise back in
A Day on the Water with Kodiak Island Resort
Do we have to be "in shape" for a charter day?

Not at all. Fishing can be as active as you want it to be. We will assist you with the setup and technique, ensuring the pace remains comfortable for your group.

Can we take photos without slowing down the whole trip?

Yes, you are welcome to take as many photos as you need.

If someone in our group needs extra help, is that a problem?

No. Let us know ahead of time and we’ll plan for it. We’re used to mixed groups and we’ll coach in a way that keeps everyone included.

What’s Included + What to Bring

A successful charter day depends largely on preparation—especially in Alaska, where weather conditions can change rapidly. To ensure you arrive comfortably, confident, and ready to fish, we have compiled the checklist we use at Kodiak Island Resort.

What’s typically included on your Kodiak Island charter

          • Guided instruction tailored to your experience level
          • Rods, reels, tackle, and bait appropriate for the day’s targets
          • All your rain gear and boots under 16 please give 120 days’ notice
          • Safety equipment and a clear safety briefing before departure
          • On-the-water coaching (hands-on or hands-off, based on your preference)
          • Basic fish handling guidance so your catch stays in great shape
          • A clear plan for timing, pacing, and what happens after you return to harbor

What to bring (the “you’ll thank yourself later” list)

          • Layers: base layer + warm mid-layer + windproof outer layer
          • Extra shoes or slippers for the lodge
          • Gloves and a warm hat: small items that make a big difference
          • Any personal meds: especially motion-sickness support if you’re prone
          • Sunscreen + sunglasses: Alaska sun can be sneaky

          Quick comfort tips

If you are concerned about motion sickness, I recommend starting your prevention plan the night before. Please stay hydrated and avoid heavy or greasy foods immediately before departure.

If you are unsure which remedies to use, please consult a local doctor. Our goal is for you to fully enjoy your day rather than just get through it.

Can I bring my own rod and tackle?

Yes, as long as it matches the targets and doesn’t complicate safety on deck. Most guests prefer using the setup we provide, but we’re happy to coordinate if you have a favorite gear.

Do you provide food and drinks?

We provide a full custom lunch and any snacks you would like to bring. We will also supply soft drinks, coffee, and water.

If you would like to have alcoholic beverages, we can recommend the most convenient stores in Kodiak to purchase them before you arrive.

What should I wear if the forecast looks good?

Please remember to dress in layers. We will provide waterproof outerwear and boots for your use.

Even with a calm forecast, conditions can change quickly. Staying dry and warm is the key to ensuring you have an amazing experience rather than counting the minutes until it’s over.

Salmon Fishing Charter with Kodiak Island Resort Large

          Safety, Licensing, and Responsible Fishing

At Kodiak Island Resort, safety is the foundation of every fishing charter we run. Before leaving the dock, we prioritize clear communication to ensure everyone knows how to move around the boat safely and comfortably.

We will cover life jacket usage, deck awareness, man overboard protocols, and more. Our goal is to ensure your day remains fun and stress-free.

Alaska’s weather and sea conditions can change quickly. To ensure your safety and provide the best possible experience, we prioritize the safest options for every trip. If conditions require adjustments to our run time, target species, or fishing area, we will explain the situation clearly before making any changes.

We operate with a “calm boat” mindset, providing clear instructions, maintaining a steady deck, and offering extra coaching for children and first-timers. When encountering wildlife, we observe responsibly from a safe distance while maintaining a primary focus on safe navigation.

Please ensure you have the appropriate Alaska fishing license and any required stamps or tags before your trip. If you are unsure what you need, please ask; Kodiak Island Resort can provide guidance, so you arrive prepared. We strictly follow all harvest regulations and handling practices to ensure fish quality and support sustainability.

Our commitment to responsible fishing includes clean hook sets, efficient landing, and careful handling. Whether you are looking for a trophy photo or a catch for your cooler, we are dedicated to guiding you with professionalism and respect for the resource.

Why Fish Kodiak (Local Knowledge That Changes the Trip)

Kodiak Island is more than just a destination; it is a unique environment defined by rugged coastlines and a deep-rooted fishing culture. Travelers from the Lower 48 seeking Kodiak fishing charters prioritize two things: a genuine opportunity for an incredible catch and the confidence that their guide possesses an authentic understanding of the island’s specific conditions.

Kodiak Resort stands out by planning trips around the island’s realities, including rapidly changing sea states and unpredictable fog. We remain adaptable, tailoring each day to the weather; while some conditions allow for long-range travel in pursuit of trophies, others require a more localized approach to ensure guest comfort without sacrificing the quality of the fishing.

The North Pacific is powerful, and local conditions can vary significantly from the harbor to the open water. We closely monitor wind direction, swell, and visibility to select the safest and most productive plan for your trip. This local expertise ensures your time is protected, and your experience remains seamless.

In Kodiak, the entire experience matters. From the harbor mornings and dramatic shorelines to the sight of bald eagles, sea otters, and whales, even the mighty Kodiak Brown Bear, these moments are why people visit. We maintain a professional and calm environment to ensure you enjoy every aspect of the trip, beyond just the catch.

To help you prepare, we provide practical island guidance on arrival times, packing layers, and properly storing your fish when you leave. We believe these small details make a significant difference.

If you are staying at Kodiak Island Resort, we can further streamline your trip. We will help coordinate your arrival, rest days, and fishing windows to ensure a seamless experience. Please share your dates, target species, and group preferences, and we will recommend a customized plan for your visit.

Why Anglers Choose Kodiak Island Resort

People come to Kodiak for the best fishing Alaska has to offer and real Alaska scenery, but they book Kodiak Island Resort because the trip feels organized, honest, and built around them. Here’s what guests consistently tell us they value most.

          • Clear communication before you arrive: We confirm timing, meeting details, and what to bring, so you don’t land in Kodiak wondering what happens next.
          • A plan that matches your goals: Trophy hunting, steady action, or a relaxed “experience-first” day—your charter is paced to fit your group.
          • Patient, practical coaching: We explain techniques in plain language, then coach you in real time, so first-timers feel confident and experienced anglers still enjoy the flow.
          • No-surprise expectations: We talk openly about run times, weather, and conditions, so your day stays stress-free and realistic.
          • Comfort-focused pacing: We adjust when needed—breaks, calmer positioning, or simpler setups—so kids and mixed-experience groups have a great time.
          • Respect for fish quality: From landing to handling, we guide you and help on keeping your catch in great shape, not just “getting it in the boat.”
          • Local mindset: Kodiak conditions change fast. We adapt the plan, explain why, and keep the day moving without chaos.
          • Easy add-on coordination: If you’re staying at Kodiak Island Resort, we help your fishing schedule fit naturally with travel days and rest.
          • A professional, calm boat vibe: Good trips feel steady—clear instructions, safe movement on deck, and a crew that stays positive.
          • Straight answers, fast: If something is unclear—timing, comfort, targets, or expectations—you get a real response, not a vague sales line.
          • A trip you’ll actually remember: The fish matter, but so do the stories, photos, scenery, and the feeling that you experienced Kodiak the right way.

If you want a charter that feels confident, guided, and enjoyable from start to finish, Kodiak Island Resort is built for that. Tell us your dates and your “perfect day,” and we’ll map the right trip.

Can you tailor the day for a family group without watering down the fishing?

Yes. We’ll keep the plan simple and comfortable for newer anglers while still structuring the day, so experienced anglers get meaningful fishing time and a real shot at standout bites.

How do you set expectations, so the trip feels "worth it" even if conditions change?

We communicate the plan and the variables upfront, then explain adjustments as they happen. The goal is a smooth, confident day where your group understands what we’re doing and why.

What makes your communication different from other Kodiak fishing charters?

We focus on clarity: meeting instructions, packing guidance, realistic pacing, and quick answers. You’ll feel guided before you arrive, not left to figure things out on the fly.

Meet the Team at Kodiak Island Resort

Meet Kodiak Resort (Our Story and Local Expertise)

Kodiak Resort was built for visitors who want an authentic Kodiak experience without the stress often associated with Alaska travel. When you book with us, you are not piecing together random services from different vendors; you are working with a team that understands how a trip should flow from arrival to departure.

Our approach is simple: we make your trip easy to plan, understand, and enjoy. We prioritize transparency by explaining what is realistic for your specific dates, detailing the experience of a day on the water, and helping you choose the right charter style for your group. This clarity allows our guests to relax and ensures your fishing trip is a highlight of the year.

Given Kodiak’s wild coastline and big-water conditions, we prioritize professionalism and preparation. From our first communication, we focus on the details that matter most, including clear meeting instructions, essential packing guidance, and a plan that respects safety and sea conditions. On the water, we provide patient coaching and maintain a calm environment, which is especially important for families and groups with mixed experience levels.

What “local expertise” means at Kodiak Resort

Local knowledge isn’t just knowing where fish might be—it’s knowing how to build a trip that works on Kodiak, even when conditions change. We bring that mindset into every detail:

          • Trip planning that matches your window: we help you choose targets and trip style based on your actual dates, not generic advice.
          • Practical comfort guidance: layers, motion, hydration, and pacing—small steps that make the day dramatically better.
          • Honest expectations: run times, weather variables, and realistic outcomes, explained in plain language.
          • Fish care support: we guide you through the “after” steps, so your catch stays in great shape beyond the dock.
          • A resort-based experience: your lodging and fishing plans can live under one roof, which makes the whole trip simpler.

As a Kodiak-based resort, we understand the logistical challenges of travel that many charter services overlook. When visiting from out of state, managing flight schedules, gear, and unpredictable weather within a limited timeframe is a significant task.

We assist you in building an efficient schedule around your check-in, rest, and fishing days. Additionally, we provide guidance on practical steps to ensure a great experience—from staying hydrated, to maintaining fish quality once you return to the dock.

          Our promise to guests

You’ll never feel “sold.” You’ll feel guided. That means fast answers, clear next steps, and a crew that wants you to have an incredible day for the right reasons: safety, simplicity, and the kind of Kodiak moments you can’t get anywhere else.

Most of all, Kodiak Island Resort is about trust. We want you to feel taken care of before you ever step on the boat. If you have questions, you get straight answers. If conditions shift, you get a clear explanation. And when the bite turns on, you get a crew that’s locked in with you—making sure the moment is safe, exciting, and worth the trip to Kodiak Island.

Pricing + What Impacts Cost (Transparent)

Pricing for Kodiak Island fishing charters depends on your chosen trip style and specific conditions. At Kodiak Island Resort, we prioritize transparency: we provide clear quotes, explain exactly what is included, and help you select the option that best fits your goals and comfort level. We focus on finding the right fit for you rather than offering a one-size-fits-all package.

          What typically affects charter pricing

          • Trip length: We offer from 3 days all the way up to 6 days.
          • Private vs. shared: Private charters reserve the boat for your group and add flexibility.
          • Season timing: Peak windows can price differently than shoulder dates.
          • Group size and needs: Families, first-timers, and specialty targets can change the plan.

          How we quote your trip

When you reach out, we’ll ask a few quick questions—your dates, group size, and top target (halibut, salmon, or variety). Then we’ll recommend the best match and provide a clear price with any deposits, timing notes, and cancellation/weather policy details explained in plain language.

What “value” really means on Kodiak

The best value isn’t the cheapest sticker price—it’s a day that feels organized, safe, and built around your priorities. A well-matched trip reduces wasted run time, avoids uncomfortable pacing, and creates more meaningful fishing time for your group.

          Payment and booking clarity

We’ll also confirm accepted payment methods, what’s due today versus later, and any add-ons your group wants to consider. If you’re comparing options, we’re happy to explain the differences so you can book with confidence.

Do you require a deposit to hold dates?
We will charge you $1000 per person to hold your charter dates. We’ll tell you the exact amount when the balance is due, and what happens if weather forces change.

Are tips included in charter pricing?
Gratuity is not included. If you’d like guidance on a typical range, ask and we’ll give you a simple, no-pressure benchmark and break down.

Can you price a trip that includes lodging at Kodiak Island Resort?

          Packing the “Kodiak way”

In Kodiak, comfort is the priority. Please be sure to bring layers, gloves, hats, and shoes to wear inside the lodge. We will provide all the necessary waterproof outerwear and footwear.

If you are checking your luggage, I recommend keeping a lightweight rain jacket and one warm layer in your carry-on bag as a precaution. Additionally, a small dry bag or waterproof pouch for your phone is a highly recommended addition for your time on the boat.

          Licenses and “must-do” errands

When buying licenses, do it before you travel or as soon as you arrive, so charter morning stays easy.

Build in weather flexibility (smart Alaska planning)

Kodiak is wild in the best way, but conditions can shift. If your trip is important—birthday, once-in-a-lifetime, corporate group—adding an extra day gives you options if weather forces an adjustment. That flexibility often turns “good” into “great.”

Do I need to buy Fishing license?

Yes.  We can purchase them at the lodge before you go on your charter.  We can also get you king stamps if needed.

Can you help us with the details of getting to Kodiak Island Resort?

Yes.  Give us a call and we will help with all the information that you will need.

Fish Processing + Shipping (How to Bring Kodiak Home)

Catching fish is only half the win—keeping it in great shape after the trip is what makes it truly worth it. Kodiak Island Resort helps you manage the next steps, so your catch stays cold, clean, and travel ready.

We will individually vacuum pack, label and freeze your fish. To ensure easy transport, we will pack them in 50lb freezer boxes so you can check them as luggage on your flight.

What happens after we return to the dock

When we return to the dock, your captain and deckhand will display your catch for photos. Afterward, we will clean, fillet, vacuum-pack, and freeze your fish for you. Your chef will then serve appetizers in the lodge shortly after.

          Shipping and travel expectations

We will pack your fish in individual 25-to-50-pound boxes to ensure easy transport to your final destination.

If your travels continue after leaving Kodiak Island Resort, we can contact your upcoming hotels to confirm they have freezer space available for your catch.

Do I need to bring a cooler, or can I buy one in Kodiak?

You will not need to bring a cooler to Kodiak Island Resort for your charter. We provide 25 to 50-pound boxes for your use at no additional cost.

How much extra does it cost to process and pack up our fish?

Nothing…all packaging and processing are included for your charter.

Can you help us decide the best plan if we're fishing for multiple days?

Yes. We will keep all of your fish in our freezer until the day of your departure. We will ensure everything is packed and ready for you before you leave.

Frequently Asked Questions (Kodiak Resort Charters)

If you are planning a Kodiak Island fishing charter from out of state, you likely have several practical questions regarding how the day is structured, how far in advance do I need to book, and how to avoid common mistakes.

The following FAQs are written just as we answer them at Kodiak Island Resort—clear, honest, and focused on helping you book the right trip for your needs

How far in advance should we reserve popular summer dates?

If you’re traveling on fixed dates (especially weekends or holiday weeks), reserve as early as you can. Peak summer calendars can tighten quickly because weather windows, boat availability, and travel schedule all stack together. If you’re flexible, we can often suggest alternate days.

Do you combine groups who don’t know each other?

Some trips are private, and some are small group depending on what’s available. If a trip involves multiple parties, we’ll tell you before you book so you can choose what you prefer. Many guests like private trips for pacing and space; others like small-group options for value.

Are there restrooms on the boat?

All of our boats are equipped with restrooms.

Can we bring alcohol or smoke on the boat?

Safety is our top priority. Please provide details regarding what your group has in mind, and we will provide a clear response along with our expectations.

What if we want a quieter, “low-talk” trip?

No problem. Some guests prefer constant instruction, while others look for a peaceful Kodiak experience with minimal chatter. Please let us know your preference so we can match our coaching style to your needs.  Regardless of your choice, we will ensure our guidance remains clear on safety and technique while aligning with your preferred atmosphere.

Do you run charters in the rain?

No. In Alaska, rain is normal and typically does not result in a trip cancellation. Our decisions are based on sea conditions, wind, visibility, and overall safety rather than precipitation.

We usually navigate into bays to stay out of the weather as much as possible. We will provide updates on how the forecast may affect comfort and advise you on which waterproof layers will ensure an enjoyable day.

Can we choose morning vs afternoon departures?

We typically depart from the docks around 7:00 AM and return between 3:00 PM and 4:00 PM. If you have booked a private boat, we can adjust the schedule to better suit your needs.

Are kids required to wear life jackets the whole time?

We’ll follow safety best practices for your group and the conditions. Life jackets are standard safety equipment, and kids often have extra requirements depending on size and situation. When you book, tell us ages and weights so we can plan the right gear and expectation.

What should we do if someone gets cold mid-trip?

Cold is usually a clothing problem, not a “toughness” problem. Layers, waterproof outerwear, gloves, and a warm hat solve most issues. If someone gets chilled, we’ll adjust pacing, suggest quick fixes, and keep the plan comfortable so the day stays fun.

Can we request specific techniques (jigging, bait fishing, etc.)?

Yes, within what’s effective and safe for the day. If you have a preferred style, tell us up front and we’ll try to build it into the plan. We’ll also be honest if conditions make another approach smarter, so your time on the water is productive.

Do you clean or fillet fish on the boat?

Fish handling procedures can vary depending on the trip and current regulations. As a standard practice, we will bleed your fish and keep them on ice. On some occasions, we will clean the salmon but keep them whole for photos.

Can we practice catch-and-release or focus on trophy photos?

Yes, we can accommodate that as long as it aligns with current regulations and safe handling practices.  If your goal is a trophy photo rather than keeping the fish, we can provide coaching on quick, responsible photography and efficient release techniques. This ensures you capture the memory while minimizing stress on the fish. Additionally, Alaska Department of Fish and Game offers certificates for some of these catch-and-release practices.

What if someone has limited mobility or needs extra assistance?

Tell us early. We’ll discuss boarding, spacing on deck, and what accommodations are realistic for the boat and conditions. Many situations are workable with good planning, and we’d rather set expectations clearly than overpromise.

Can you coordinate multiple boats for a larger group?

Depending on dates and availability, we are able to help structure a multi-boat plan. The key is booking early and being clear about your group size, goals, and whether you want everyone fishing the same boat or staggered for the experience.
